You could buy Nightfall and play that, or Prophecies (the original), or factions, but, your best value would be to buy the trilogy - it's only $50! That way, you'll be getting all three for pretty cheap.

Eye of the North is an expansion which has some nice PvE only skills and some other unique features. It's all level 20 content, not as expansive as the 3 campaigns, but has quite a bit to offer.

For the new player on a budget...

Short answer:

Yes.

Long answer:

Yeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssss.

You can choose to purchase only one chapter; but you have to realize that having only one can (and will be) very restricted in the way of skills, heroes, PvP, etc.

Prophecies is the "original" (read: first) campaign that came out; if you care about the story at all, I would buy it.

Factions is the shortest (read: second) campaign, which introduced the biggest addition of PvP that this game has seen yet, as well as the Ritualist and Assassin. Luxons and Kurzicks are always fun, too.

Nightfall is the most tedious (read: third) campaign, which introduced first heroes, as well as the Paragon and Dervish. Also, the main city (Kamadan) is the biggest trading area in the game right now.

Eye of the North is [the only real] expansion; it contains "level-20 exclusive" areas/missions/etc. It introduces "dungeons" ("instances" in WoW if you've ever played it) as well as many other things, such as more skills, more heroes, etc.

I would say that any and all of the campaigns (and expansion) are worth getting. Also, considering buying the entire game (Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, Eye of the North) is less than $50 now, is also worth it. (They were about $40+/each at release and there for a time afterward.)

You should really check the Wiki out, it may answer more of your questions.

If you decided to tl;dr this: You can get away with just one. You would be happier to get all.

Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall are all stand-alone campaigns. That means if you just own one campaign, not having the others won't effect your gameplay; however, if you did posses all three campaigns you can travel between them freely (after certain requirements are met) with the same character. So if you like the Dervish class and Nightfall looks most appealing to you then you should buy it.

Eye of the North is an expansion that offers more of a challenge to players, it also has alot of great content, but then again....so do all of the campaigns
Most notably, Eye of the North can link you to the upcoming Guild Wars 2.

As mentioned above, the Trilogy pack would be your best buy and to be honest if you do get hooked onto to Guild Wars your going to want all of the campaigns.

oh another nice thing is guilds have more than just the guild. it also has the possibility of an alliance. up to 10 guilds to an alliance, 100 people per guild, up to 1,000 people in an alliance. and all ur characters are linked to one guild, instead of the possibility of joining 2-3 guilds across one account.

If you do plan on getting it, check out ebay. i bought all 4 on ebay for less than $50. and once ur trial is over u have to buy the game. (not sure if that was part of the question. i might have read it wrong idk) all in all its a good game. its not like wow where u can run into others while fighting a mob and get your mob stolen, because you get your own map. And you dont have mounts or ferrys that you have to watch your character fly for 10 minutes just to get to another outpost to run to a town. u just press m and click on the town you want (if you've been there already)

oh and dont buy eye of the north by itself. you wouldnt be able to play at all. you have to buy either prophecies, factions, or nightfall in order to play eye of the north.

good luck with your decision

You'll have to be careful in the fact that any used Guild Wars game is completely useless. I've seen this done on eBay before; they use the key, sell the game.

I think that Prophecies is the best of all the chapters. It is not the cheapest of the chapters but it is the easest to learn. I would advise searching the web for the various chapters on sale. It is not difficult to find all the chapters at a very reasonable price. Here is what I found on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...on=guild+wars+

If you're sure you only want the Dervish, then Nightfall will do just fine. It's got almost all of the Dervish skills and all of the relevant items. But really, you'll end up buying the other chapters too because you'll want to take your Dervish through the other continents. Might as well get them all at once to save a bit of money in the long run.

Prophecies is the cheapest; Platinum Edition on NewEgg is $9.99 (right now, anyway). [Platinum Edition includes Prophecies and EoTN.] Eye of the North alone is $10.99. (Why they do that I'll never know).

Depending on where (read: what site) and when (time of a certain sale that's going on) can determine the prices.

As has been said, yes, you can just buy nightfall - and you can simply add the retail Nightfall key to your trial account. However, be aware that you won't be able to continue with your Prophecies (trial) character (or get any of the gold or items off the trial character) unless you buy Prophecies (or the Trilogy).
If you just want to start a Dervish, that's not a problem, of course.

You are corret, sort of. The cheapest of the chapters I have ever purchassed was Factions; it was on sale for $4.99. The cheapest I have ever paid for Prophecies was $9.99 the Platinum Edition was $10.99 at the time, hmmm still is. The price difference tells me that Eye of the North is worth one dollar, just a little under valued.
My point was that he could, fairly easly, get all of the chapters at very reasonable price.

Reasonable cost differs between people and their budgets.

That said, you will usually only find bargain prices online. You can still get the Collector's Edition of Nightfall from gogamer.com for $17.90 plus shipping. Most retail stores charge close to full price still, if they carry the games at all. The prices will not go up, so feel easy about buying just Nightfall now and adding others as you go along. They are all great fun and good for longterm gaming.
